About Us

The St. Christopher Health Fund is a discretionary fund for staff members and pensioners of the Bank of England (BoE).

Members can ask for assistance from the Fund to cover certain medical expenses. This includes items that are either not covered by existing health insurance e.g. alternative therapies, or where insurance limits are exceeded. If in doubt, please contact the Fund Administrator before commencing any treatment.

The Fund is administered by a Committee of Bank of England staff and pensioners.

Fund Mission

The Fund is a discretionary fund set up to provide mutual aid to its members by assisting with payment for medical treatment and specialist consultation fees incurred by a member or by a registered partner or other registered dependent relatives. The Fund also makes charitable donations to hospitals and medical charities from time to time.

The Fund is managed by a Committee elected by members at the Fund’s Annual General Meeting. The Committee is responsible for exercising the duties and discretions set out in the Rules. The Rules include information on membership and the way in which requests from members for assistance are considered by the Committee.

Charities/Bequests

Each year since 1980 the St Christopher Health Fund has made charitable donations to charities which work within the UK health and social care sectors.

St. Christopher Fund members may nominate a charity to receive a donation. The criteria for a charity to be considered are given below. If you wish to make a nomination for a 2026 donation please complete a nomination form and send it to the fund administrator by 28 February 2027. The nominations will then be considered by the SCHF Charitable Donations Sub Committee which will in turn make recommendations to the full SCHF Committee ahead of the 2026 AGM.

The criteria for a charitable donation to be considered are as follows:

• The charity must work within the UK health and social care sectors.
• The charity’s income must be below £10 million.
• The charity must be registered with the Charity Commission.
• The charity must have submitted Annual Returns to the Charity Commission.
• The charity must not have received a donation from the Fund in the last 5 years (below are the recipients over the past five years, who each received a share of £3000.)
• The charity must be nominated by a Fund member.
•The nominating member should not have an official link to the charity, such as a trusteship. For the purpose of this condition, volunteering for the charity does not count as an official link.

From time to time members or their dependents also leave sums to the Fund in their will. These additional funds help contribute to the ongoing financial strength of the Fund. The Committee is very grateful to members who remember the Fund after they’ve gone. If you would like to consider leaving something to the Fund in your will please contact the Fund Administrator.

SCHF News

As part of our continuing efforts to improve efficiency, we are keen to reduce the number of cheques issued in respect of claim payments, preferring instead to directly credit the bank accounts of claimants. Therefore, when submitting a claim, in addition to the necessary receipts/invoices, please also provide your bank account details (i.e. sort code, account number and account title).

If you have any questions about the above items, please contact the
Fund Administrator via the Contact Us page.
